Divers break medal drought

Sydney, 28 September 2000

Australian's Men's and Women's Synchronized Diving Team today broke a 76-year-old medal drought when they both won Bronze in the Diving Pool at Homebush.

Rebecca Gilmore and Loudy Tourky achieved success on the 10m Platform whilst Robert Newbery and Dean Pullar followed their female compatriots to take their medal in the 3m Springboard Final.

The divers are four of the originally Foster's Sports Foundation grant recipients to achieve what many people thought impossible, when they both came from 7th place to snatch Bronze Medals.

This increased the Foster's Sports Foundation medal tally to four bronze.

Following last night's Gold success by Lauren Burns, Fosters' Sports Foundation athletes now have won four gold, four silver and four bronze.

Australia's latest medallists are four of 183 Australian athletes selected for the Games who are original recipients of the Foster's Sports Foundation.

Established in 1997 the Foster's Sports Foundation has provided $2.275 million toward recognising and promoting excellence in Olympic sport across Australia.

The Foundation specifically targeted up-and-coming athletes with grants being given to a total of 338 individual recipients.

In the first wave of grants, $1,175,000 was provided to aspiring Olympic athletes.

The Foundation has also provided grants of $3,000 to athletes selected for the Australian Olympic team who are not recipients of medal incentive scheme funding or other significant grants.

In total more than 365 individual Olympic competitors have received one of these grants.
